Who: Andrew Belle

What: The Ladder

How: Oh My Stars featured on an episode of Private Practice. Don't judge me.

Why: I don't know why. I don't read Pitchfork or anything but something tells me they wouldn't like Andrew Belle. Wait. Let me check. Nope nothing. What about Tiny Mix Tapes? Nothing! OK Google Blogsearch comes up with this review by Now It's On. This will have to do. I can't explain why Andrew Belle is good, but he is. I really don't like choosing a favourite, and I have to admit I've chosen The Ladder because it has had the most plays. That's got to mean something I guess. Be warned that there is banjo in some places, but not in an annoying Mumford and Sons kind of way. Which makes me like it even more.

Who: Stars

What: The Five Ghosts

Why: Seriously, I haven't thought properly about writing about 15 different albums. And it's hard to believe that neither this, Arcade Fire or The National made it to the top. But this is still brilliant. When everything else starts to sound samey you can put The Five Ghosts on and it'll wake up your iPhone/iPod/whatever.

Who: The National

What: High Violet    

Why: Oh this was so going to be the year of The National. Bloodbuzz Ohio was a good sign of what was to come, and I'd managed to get tickets to see them at a pretty cool venue in November. But then I got 'High Violet block'. After a month of listens I couldn't listen to it anymore. It was still good, but I dunno, I just couldn't listen to it. I know why, but to go on about it will only make you realise yes, you were right when you thought that there was something not quite right about me. And November didn't happen either. But that doesn't mean they weren't good.

Why: Not sure why. I didn't enjoy Neon Bible much, and this has been sold as looking back at the suburb you grew up in or something. Which I didn't, and doing that funny video thing with Google Chrome only underlined that.

How: Many thanks to Beckie for featuring Ra Ra Riot on her blog. I got the hint, eventually.

Why: There's quite a lot of new stuff I've come across this year, mainly ones that people recommend and say 'you might not like it at first, listen to it a few times, and you will!'. I should know because I tried to sell The National to sister #4 that way. It didn't work, until I mentioned they featured on a trailer for One Tree Hill. Pffft. Anyway, to quote the boy, in Massa-choooo-setts...

Why: I didn't pick up on the Black Keys until I heard a track by Dan Auerbach on an episode of Friday Night Lights. But that's irrelevant. I really really like Brothers and am kind of annoyed at hearing Next Girl on a trailer for Hollyoaks. I still like it, though.
